Our Kitchen & Diet Preferences
The food created at Self Pleasure Food, is based on the types of food I am happy to serve to my family and my kids. I'm a health conscious Mum, with a healthy love of food treats and baking, so it's important to me for all items to be low in sugar, free of preservatives & chemical toxins (organic where possible, and plastic free packaging!), and to avoid ingredients that inflame our bodies, or generally overload our gut microbiome, and therefore our immune systems.
My food preferences have evolved over the past 10 years to suit my families specific needs, so I don't particularly stick to any one dietary label. We are a mish mash of several common labels, and also sometimes make exceptions to these rules for various reasons.
We are not strictly gluten free, however I do usually avoid most grains / gluten containing ingredients. We occassionally eat wheat or other grains, but generally only if it has been fermented (e.g. sourdough), soaked or sprouted appropriately, to reduce the phytic acid / phytate levels. Phytic acid is a substance found in many grains, seeds, nuts and legumes, which can reduce the absorbtion of nutrients into your body - an anti-nutrient, or nutrient blocker, if you will. Reducing phytic acid is an important aspect of my families diet, therefore I prioritise this in my ingredient choices in Self Pleasure Food products. This is why we activate our nuts and seeds in many cases. Most of the foods we eat are dairy free, however we do occassionally make exceptions to this.
Our Self Pleasure Food preparation kitchen, items and utensils are kept thoroughly clean for your personal food safety, however we do not have separate areas for gluten and gluten free, dairy and dairy free etc products, as per celiac certification or severe dairy allergy standards. In addition to this, some of the bulk food items that we buy wholesale (such as some nuts), state that various allergens may be present. For these reasons, we cannot guarantee that our products may not contain traces of common food allergens, such as wheat, gluten, nuts, eggs, soy and sesame (list not exhaustive).
Therefore, we recommend that those with severe allergies, do not consume our products. (Please contact us if you have any further specific questions regarding this.)
We DO however HIGHLY RECOMMEND our products to those without severe allergies, who are looking to improve their and their families diets, reduce sugar intake, reduce inflamatory ingredients, reduce toxins and preservatives, and increase the variety and absorption of nutrients into their bodies.
Please check each products details thoroughly before purchase, to ensure that each item is suitable for you - whether that be low sugar, gluten free, dairy free, soy free, nut free and / or vegan friendly options.
Low Sugar information
There are many varying definitions of what different people mean by low sugar. Please note that our products are NOT sugar free, and we do not use artificial sweeteners.
Please note: If you are diabetic, or have any other kind of low sugar requirement, please consult your health practitioners and your own intuition to decide whether our products are right for you or not. We do not give dietary advice.
Given that, let me explain the Self Pleasure Food ethos with regards to sugars. The sugars we use, are chosen for their nutrient value. Most mainstream products use refined sugars that have been stripped of most of their nutrition. At Self Pleasure Food, we look for sugars that have had the least refining done as possible (closest to their original form), to keep more vitamins, minerals and nutrients in tact.
We also look for unrefined sugar sources that contain a wide variety of nutrients. Organic coconut sugar is a favourite in our products, and we also often supplement this witih a small amount of organic molasses to really up the nutrient value, and give a hint of caramel-like depth to it's flavour.
As a general rule, we will aim to use the least amount of those sugars as possible, while still maintaining a tasty flavour, that appeals to most palates. Occassionally some of the more complex or decadent products will be slightly higher in sugar than the other products, but generally the sweetness level will always be MUCH lower than mainstream supermarket brands.
How sweet each item tastes to you, depends on what level your palette is currently normalised at. If you regularly eat high sugar products - our items might take a little getting used to, and could take a few tries over time, to adjust your palette to the lower sweetness level. However if you are already adept at eating or baking low sugar items yourself, you will likely find Self Pleasure Food products to be the perfect level of sweet treat, that's actually good for you and your body.
For a rough indication, here is how much sugar is in our signature 'Creamy Dark Chocolate' 90g bar, and our 'Rustic White Chocolate' 90g bar - both contain less than 3.5 teaspoons of sugar per bar. So, just over 1 teaspoon of sugar per serving.
Please don't hesitate to contact us, if you have any additional questions.
Much love.. Cherie @ Self Pleasure Food.. 🍫🤎
